Step 4: Mounting the hooks
previous step | back to overview | next step
A Cannier has three points of suspension. Two of them are the pair of hooks. Make a hole for each hook on the bottom part.
Just like any pannier, the closer the Cannier is to the center of the bicycle, the better. Though we have to make sure to leave enough space for our heels to pass by.
Sit on your bike, pedal backwards and check your heel’s trajectory. Try to find a point of reference on the frame for the backmost point your heel reaches. You should do this with the largest shoes you would ride your bike with, the one that has the most protruding heel.
You should leave around 2 cm of distance between the Cannier and the point of reference just in case. If you tilt the Cannier forward, you can get its center of mass even closer to the center of the bicycle. The height should be set around the top of the rack, but that should be decided during the next step.
Position the holes
Hang the two hooks on the rack. Try to place them as further apart as you can, keeping in mind that they have to fit on the Cannier’s side with the 30 mm diameter washers. This means you will have to drill the holes at least 15 mm away from the edges of the cans.
When you hang the hooks, leave space on both sides of them, in case you will still need to slide the Cannier backward or forward.
Hold the DIY pannier in the position that you have decided on, and mark the holes on the side can. The lower a pannier hangs, the more stable the bicycle. The hooks come with extra washers to make space for the lid to slide in between the bottom part and the hooks. You should still leave at least 25 mm of distance between the lid and the holes because of the large washers.
Please, take a last look to make sure that the embroidered label on the upper strap is on the rear side.
Drill
Drill 5 mm diameter holes with wood bits. The hole will seem a little tight for pushing the screws through. You will probably have to drive them in with a wrench. Still, we recommend not making a larger hole because a tight hole will hold better.
Alternatively, you can poke the plastic through with a hot nail, but in that case clear the remaining molten plastic with a knife.
Mount the hooks with the screws
The hooks come with a specific order of washers. Please check on the photo below to get the washer order right when mounting the hooks. Tighten the screws to 13 Nm torque.
