Step 5: Mounting the third point of suspension
A Cannier has three points of suspension. The third is made out of the clamp, the one-eyed rabbit, and the quick release. Position the clamp on the rack, and make a hole for the quick release on the bottom part.
Find the right position for the clamp on the rack
Screw the clamp and the one-eyed rabbit steel plate together on the rack. Place it as low as you can and place it below the middle point of the Cannier.
Turn the one-eyed rabbit to leave the bottom of the opening in between the rabbit’s ears at the height of the fixed screw (photo), then tighten the screws a little bit. Slide the quick release in the bottom of this opening and try to open and close it. If there is something in its way, you will need to find a different place for the clamp.
Position the hole
Hang the Cannier on the rack and mark a dot on the Cannier at the bottom of the opening in between the rabbit’s ears. Do this with the Cannier packed with weight, because weight might lower it a little bit.
Drill a 6 mm diameter hole with wood bits. The hole will seem a little tight for pushing the screw through. You will probably have to drive it in with a wrench. Still, we recommend not making a larger hole because a tight hole will hold better.
Alternatively, you can poke the plastic through with a hot nail, but in that case clear the remaining molten plastic with a knife.
Mount the quick release with the nuts
Unscrew the one-eyed rabbit from the clamp, and use it for adjusting the tightness of the quick release. The threaded shaft should be turned into the barrel nut all the way, but should not come out of it. Tighten the flange nut, until the quick release locks the one-eyed rabbit with comfortable finger pressure for closing, then keep it closed.
Push the shaft through the hole on the Cannier, and tighten the nut on the other side. Keep counter force with a hex wrench on the inside of the threaded shaft and tighten the nut. Make sure the quick release lever opens and closes in vertical direction.
The nuts and washers on the quick release come in a specific order. Please check on the photo below when mounting the quick release.
Tighten the nuts on the quick release to 12 Nm torque.
Tighten the screws of the clamp to 14 Nm torque.
