Step 3: Mounting the side straps
previous step | back to overview | next step
Position the holes.
Mount the upper strap on the lid and try it on the bottom part. Push the lid down and pull down on the strap adjusters. Mark the holes for the straps.
The holes have to be at least 20 mm below the lid and at least 15 mm below the strap adjuster, but the closer the distance is to the minimum, the better. You can place the holes 10 mm lower than that if you feel you have not pushed the lid down hard enough, or have not pulled the strap adjusters until the upper strap tenses.
Drill
Mark the holes first, then drill 5 mm diameter holes with wood bits. The hole will seem a little tight for pushing the screws through. You will probably have to drive them in with a wrench. Still, we recommend not making a larger hole because a tight hole will hold better.
Alternatively, you can poke the plastic through with a hot nail, but in that case clear the remaining molten plastic with a knife.
Mount the straps with the screws
The side straps are laced in the strap adjuster in a specific way. If you have unlaced them, please follow the lacing on this photo carefully to lace them the same way they were. The side straps can be unlaced on their hooped end too, but it is easier on the other end, with the screw removed.
Use one washer above the strap, and one on the inner side of the can. Tighten the screws to 11 Nm torque.
