Step 2: Mounting the upper strap
previous step | back to overview | next step
Position the holes
Distance between the holes: 12 cm. The portion of strap between those two holes will be the handle of the DIY bike pannier. Try to place the handle in the middle, if possible, parallel to the longer sides. Sometimes the shape of the can does not allow you to place the handle in the middle, but it is not a problem. Place it more toward the front or on the rear, but not on the sides.
Handle moved back because of the shape of the lid. →
Many plastic canisters will have a deeper groove along the middle line right below the handle. In case you need to place one of the screws in that center groove, make sure it is the rear screw. We recommend this because rainwater could accumulate in the groove, but with the Cannier tilted forward, and the groove on the rear side, it will get emptied.
←
Centered, but not symmetrical. Lower sitting screw should be on the rear.
→
Centered and symmetrical.
Prepare the surface
Water getting inside the Cannier around the screws of the handle should not be a concern. If mounted with the right tightness, the screws will press the washers against the plastic strong enough to seal the hole. To make sure this happens, you should remove the flash in the area of the screws. The ‘flash’ is a production defect. It is the line of extra material around the can where two sides of the mold were joined. Most cans will have this. You can cut it with a sharp knife or spread it with a hot piece of metal.
Mark the holes and drill
Mark the holes first, then drill 5 mm diameter holes with wood bits. The hole will seem a little tight for pushing the screws through. You will probably have to drive them in with a wrench. Still, we recommend not making a larger hole because a tight hole will hold better.
Alternatively, you can poke the plastic through with a hot nail, but in that case clear the remaining molten plastic with a knife.
Set the right length for the upper strap
The strap comes with multiple holes to fit different size cans. To adjust the length of the strap to your can, try it on. The strap adjusters should be around the bottom of the lid when you pull down on them. This depends on the height of the lid, too. You should do it like this to have the side strap screws significantly higher than the center of the DIY bicycle pannier, otherwise it will be unstable when you lift it up.
← This is a tall lid, the strap adjuster is above lid level.
In the case of a short lid, you can leave the strap adjuster below the lid, but try to avoid leaving the marked distances unnecessarily big. →
The strap is folded in a specific way around the screws. If it gets unfolded, please follow the pattern on the photos below to fold them back the same way they were.
Mount the straps with the screws
Please position the embroidered label on the rear side of the handle.
Use one washer above the strap, one between the strap and the lid, and one on the inner side of the lid. Unless the shape of the lid prevents you from doing so, use the two bigger washers for the outer side, and the smaller washer for the inside. When tightening the screws, keep the screws still and only rotate the nuts, otherwise the strap will turn together with the screws. Tighten the screws to 11 Nm torque.
