Making your own: The hooks
previous step | back to overview | next step
For one Cannier, you need one pair of hooks.
Shape
You will need flat J hooks with an open end. Some plastic hooks come with the opening curved inwards, which might seem like a good idea at first, as it gives a sense of security, but it will not be comfortable to use with this design.
When you choose the hooks, have in mind the diameter of your rack tubes. It will need to fit loosely because the plastic cover will reduce the diameter of the hook's curve.

Material thickness
The thickness for steel hooks depends on the width. 13 mm wide hooks should have 3 mm thickness, 20 mm wide hooks should have 2 mm thickness.
In the case of plastic hooks it is hard to give any advice, as it depends a lot on the material composition.
Plastic cover
We highly recommend using coated hooks to protect your rack. You can either buy already coated hooks, or cover them yourself. The cheapest way is to pull a piece of water hose on them. We use large diameter, thick wall, adhesive lined polyolefin tubing and bake them. You will need to consider the thickness of the plastic cover: when it is added to the curve of the hook, it should fit the diameter of your rack's tube.
Screws
For a single hook you will need these: M5 * 16 mm screw, M5 nut with blocking plastic insert, 3 pcs 5,3 mm * 15 mm washers, 2 pcs 5,3 mm * 30 mm washers. We recommend using stainless screws.
